Solar Power Cables & Wiring

Inter-Module Cables - Used to connect one solar module to another. They are
available in 2-strand, 26", 36" and 72" lengths.

Output Cables - Used to connect your solar PV system to your electric junction
box. These 2-strand cables are available in 4' to 100' lengths.

MC Output Cables - Multi-Contact Module Interconnect (Male). Each cable
includes MC connector, 1/2" non-metallic cord connector with a #10AWG type
'USE' 600V rated outdoor black wire.

Controller to Battery - 1-strand, 14" and 16" controller to battery cables.

Inverter Cables - 1-strand, 2.5' and 5' pair inverter cable.

Battery Cables - 9" to 10' 1-strand, 2/0 AWG and 4/0 AWG type battery cables.

Minimum: 6105-T5 Aluminum Extrusion
Some manufacturers use thinner gauge aluminum mounting rails.  These require
more holes drilled in the roof for additional mounting points to provide the rigidity
needed to secure the panels.

It is relatively easy to compare the aluminum rails by laying one on the ground and
putting your weight on it.  If it cannot support your weight it is probably not strong
enough to secure your system for the next several years.

Request the specific brand and model of the mounting system as well as the
warranty.  This is an important component.  Do not accept generic terms -- ask for
the manufacturer and the specific model number.

Some sellers have attempted to package name-brand manufactured solar panels
and inverters with cheap, inferior mounting racks.  On the surface it may appear
to be a good buy, however, compromising the quality of the mounting system
could endanger your entire investment.

Solar Panel Wiring

Series or Parallel

Solar panels can be wired in series or in
parallel to increase voltage or amperage.

Series wiring connects the positive
terminal of one panel to the negative
terminal of another. The outer positive
and negative terminals will produce
voltage the sum of the two panels, but
the amperage remains the same as one
panel. So two 12 volt/3.5 amp panels
wired in series produce 24 volts at 3.5
amps. Four of these wired in series
produce 48 volts at 3.5 amps.

Parallel wiring refers to connecting
positive terminals to positive terminals
and negative to negative. The result is
that voltage stays the same, but
amperage becomes the sum of the
number of panels. So two 12 volt/3.5
amp panels wired in parallel would
produce 12 volts at 7 amps. Four panels
would produce 12 volts at 14 amps.  

Series/parallel wiring refers to doing
both of the above - increasing volts and
amps to achieve the desired voltage as
in 24 or 48 volt systems.
